ACHAVAL FERRER
When the two Argentine industrialists Santiago Achaval and Manuel Ferrer decided they wanted to change careers and do something “that didn´t involve wearing a tie”, little did they know that their small adventure in wine would make such a huge impression world wide. Achaval Ferrer were the first Argentine winery to score 96 points in Wine Spectator and their wines will continue to blaze a trail and prove to the skeptics that Argentine wine is a force to be dealt with. There are many factors that contribute to their success but the main one is hiring Italian maestro Roberto Cipresso as head winemaker. This and a finicky selection of only the best grapes from the best areas (in this case La Consulta in Valle de Uco) ensures labels like Mirador and Altamira will continue wowing drinkers and silencing critics. The newly built winery is situated close to the dry riverbed of the Rio Mendoza in Lujan de Cuyo. It is not open to mainstream tourism and visits are hard to get especially in the high season. Tours though are memorable sessions in the cellar where we try component varietals from the barrel of the Altamira blend.
